We are honored to have David Winickoff (YC 96) who heads the OECD’s Emerging Technologies Unit where he works on the governance of emerging technologies. Prior to the OECD, David was tenured faculty and directed U.C. Berkeley’s Program on Science and Technology Studies. David will talk about “Can we harness emerging technologies for good?” which I am sure will bring a lively debate.

Emerging technologies like AI and biotechnology pose critical dilemmas in ethics, politics and governance. For instance, advances in gene editing are reshaping debates about genetically modified organisms, both human and non-human. AI is transforming the very foundations of knowledge production, work, education, and the economy but carries, if we listen to some leaders in the field, existential risks. Neurotechnologies are enabling cognitive enhancement and the reading mental states, both of high interest both to consumers and the military. Technologies like these carry potential benefits, risks, and uncertainties. Given the fast pace of technological change, can we do anything to help ensure that emerging technologies serve the public good?
