- December 8 Dinner with Thad Carhart: After his successful
public reading, Thad joined 12 alumni for a discussion of the
challenges of writing a historical novel. The dinner-debate in a
member’s apartment ended at a late hour and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
- October 10 Walking tour of Paris: Eleven Yalies enjoyed a
walking tour focusing on the Paris of Ernest Hemingway and other
expatriate writers of the 1920s and 1930s.
- September 16 Book Reading by Thad Carhart: It was standing room only at
the American Library for a public reading of renowned author and Yale Club of France member
Thad Carhart’s latest book: Across the Endless River
- July 6 Annual Meeting: Fulfilling our legal obligation as an
“Association 1901”, the Yale Club of France held its annual meeting.
The President’s review of events this past year and the Treasurer’s
report of the funds available were approved. Elections for the club
officers were also held. The current year’s officers are always listed
here.
- May 17 Yale Day of Service: French alumni participated in a
colorful parade in support of leukemia research for children. Attendants
spanned the age range. Thanks to Isabelle Chauche for organizing this event.
- April 14 Speech by Dean Robert Storr: Over 100 people came to
hear Dean Robert Storr of the School of Arts give a fascinating talk
on the influence of musician John Cage on a wide range of late 20th
century artists. This event was organized by the Arts Arena at the
American University of Paris.
- April Admissions: For September 2009 matriculation (Class
of 2013), we had five students admitted to Yale College. Nearly all of
the record 45 applicants from France were interviewed — many thanks to
our interviewers and to Alfred Dittrick who is stepping down this
year after years of dedicated service to the ASC.
- February 16 Dinner with Christopher Szpilman: Japanese historian
and Yale Graduate Christopher Szpilman entertained a large group of
alumni at Le Procope restaurant on the history of judo in Japan. An
excellent dinner was accompanied by a lively Q&A.
- February 5 “Feb Club” Party: Once again the
until-recently defunct, venerable Yale undergraduate tradition
returned to Paris. Over a dozen Yalies young and old joined in the
celebrations as part of our regular monthly Happy Hour at Carr’s
pub.
- January 19 Dinner with Ray Gindroz: Renowned architect, urban
designer and former Yale Professor Ray Gindroz talked about “The Place
of the Dwelling” and its importance in our daily lives. Fifteen
alumni came to member Kate Thweatt’s dwelling to participate in this
lively dinner, presentation and debate.
